Barking & Dagenham College has received two awards for its employment-led education this summer, in both construction and digital and the creative industries.
The college was awarded the Mayor's Construction Academy (MCA) quality mark, which recognises high quality construction skills training provision in London; and a plaque for its contribution to employer-led education in the digital and creative industry by the Career Colleges Trust.
The MCA was set up to help more Londoners train in the skills they need to access construction-sector vacancies on the capital’s housing construction sites.
The college will now be able to bid alongside councils, housing associations, homebuilders and construction companies for funding to coordinate skills training with employers' needs, as well as engaging with local schools to promote construction careers.
Barking & Dagenham College principal and chief executive Yvonne Kelly said: "As one of London’s largest providers of construction training, we are playing a key role in helping to close the skills gap in the construction industry in London. We are thrilled that we have been awarded the MCA quality mark in recognition of the high-quality training we provide."
The college became a Digital & Creative Industries Career College in 2015 to offer training designed by employers in order for students to learn appropriate skills for jobs in the digital and creative industries.
Joe Cole, curriculum manager of IT, Finance and Accounts said: "We were so proud of our learners when they won a competition run by the Career Colleges Trust, Amazon Web Services and Comic Relief earlier this year These experiences give students invaluable work experience and also a fantastic opportunity to discuss something really impressive at interview and on their CVs."
