A new major arts project at The Boathouse Creative Studios in Barking’s Heritage Quarter has this week received a £10,000 funding boost through a National Lottery grant.

The venue, based at the unique riverside setting of The Ice House Quarter, will as a result of the funding start a project called The Hidden History of Barking Creek.

The studios received the vital grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, and the project will offer a unique chance to discover and celebrate the industrial, maritime and community heritage of the Barking Creek part of the River Roding

Project participants will work with an artist and writer to generate an original mural and exhibition, which will focus on the stories surrounding this historic location.

The mural will be painted on the restored Granary building owned by Rooff Ltd at the heart of the Icehouse Quarter in Abbey Road.

The Boathouse team are searching for volunteers who are interested in heritage, and who will be trained in research methods through a distance learning course called Cultural Heritage and the City run by digital education platform futurelearn.com.

For the project participants will head to Valence House Museum, in Dagenham, and the Museum of London to uncover photos and material relating to the heritage of Barking Creek.

The Boathouse venue is a cultural and community organisation that regularly holds arts workshops, exhibitions and wellbeing classes, encouraging group activities for the public.

The Boathouse’s artistic director, Carole Pluckrose, said: “We are delighted to have received this support for our project, and are sure that thanks to the National Lottery players we are able to create a permanent legacy to the history and stories of Barking Creek.”
